GU14 Tigermoths vs Wimbledon Thunder

Brilliant end to the season!

Done and dusted!

Oh wow it’s so much easier to write a match report when all the team’s hard work does come with the deserved results! And how wonderful to finish the season with everything built during the season falling into place.

Let me first thank our four amazing Lacewings that came ‘up’ to play with us. Lots of skills on display, you fitted right in, and played your socks off. Brilliant!

It was so much fun to watch and see all strands of technique and match-tactics and team-play that you have been building all season come together, and see everything click into a higher gear.

Over the season we’ve built a fearsome defensive backline, and that was on display today. Like before we withstood several short corners with ease. Loosely  counted I estimate we’ve faced about 457 short corners this season, and only 5 or 6 of those managed to find the backboard. Amazing. What became even better today was the distribution of the ball after winning it back, wide or driving up yourself.

Over the season our midfield progressed in leaps and bounds, stronger tackles to win the ball back, better positioning, keeping shape and fluid adapting to the situation of play. And today this worked the best it did all season. Flooding the opposition in attack, closing all lines when they had the ball, very very good.

In attack we have been so close so often this season that it became really frustrating. Too often did we choose a pass over a direct shot, did we forget to be clinical or tactical. Not this match. Fluid runs into the oppo D both direct and from the wings, great snappy passing and lots of shots. 5 goals in one match, three goal scorers, amazing.

I was very impressed by the communication, the way everyone helped everywhere where needed, the great passing, the way we got results in the oppo D. Not just the goals, but the way we won more short corners in one match than ever before (go for that foot 😁).

It could have been more, even much more, had Wimbledon been a bad team, but their goalie was great, and their defensive numbers and quality high. They were also lighting fast on the rebound, breaking out many times (scoring their one goal from such a quick breakout) but (well done!) only to then be smothered by our midfield and defence.

Their quality makes it even better we scored so many!

Clearly a very studying match, lovely sunshine, great goals, a deserved win and the satisfaction of seeing all you learned this season come together and work. Best way to end the season. A high.

Well done girls, and let’s do this again next year!
