Welcome to Spencer Hockey Club

Who we are

Founded over a century ago, Spencer is one of the most vibrant hockey clubs in the country - for a brief time in the 1970's we had the finest club side in Europe, and since then we have expanded to become one of London's biggest and most successful clubs. We run 13 men's teams, 7 women's teams, mixed hockey and a thriving junior hockey section. Playing success is only part of the story: our ambition is to provide the most enjoyable hockey we can for everyone from the youngest child to the oldest adult.

Spencer HC is affiliated to England Hockey, the governing body for hockey in England.

Fortress Fieldview

Spencer Hockey Club is a part of The Spencer Club, a multi-sports club at the heart of Earlsfield. Fortress Fieldview is home to our state-of-the-art astroturf pitch and clubhouse and bar.

Competitive Hockey

Competitive hockey matches take place on Saturdays. Pre-season training starts in July and competitive matches run from September to early April. Skills and fitness training take place on mid-week evenings, times vary depending on the team played for.

Our men's 1st XI plays in South Premier 1, the division below National League, with our remaining men's teams split between the Higgins London League and the South, Surrey and Surrey Open Hockey Leagues. Our women's 1st XI competes in the South Clubs' Women's Hockey League Div 1 with our remaining women's teams competing in Surrey Ladies Leagues. We have aspirations to achieve national league status for both our Men's and Women's sections. We also enter teams in England Hockey's cup competitions, including the Mixed Cup and Veterans' Competitions.

Social Hockey

Mixed adult hockey provides a more relaxed though equally enjoyable outlet for many players.

Friday Night Mixed meets at 7:45-9pm every Friday all year round (not school holidays), and mainly attracts the player looking for a slightly slower pace or someone returning from injury. Friday night hockey players do not usually play competitive Saturday hockey, and there is a charge of £120 for half year. Format may be 6-a-side on half pitch, maybe 11-a-side depending on turn out. No drills, just match play. Drinks at the bar compulsory afterwards.

Summer League is a 6 or 7-a-side format where teams from Spencer and other clubs compete at Spencer's all weather pitch in leagues. Mixed, Mens and Womens teams leagues at a range of levels are available.

At every level we’re looking to take the next step up; training hard but playing fair - there's only one Spencer Hockey Club.

How to Join

Joining the Senior Section

With 13 men’s and 8 ladies’ senior sides there’s a team for everyone at Spencer - whether you’re looking to get back into the sport or want a crack at playing National League hockey.

For the first time in the club's history, both our Men's and Women's 1st XI play in the UK's National League, while all other teams play across the London Hockey League. Competitive teams train from Monday to Thursday at our home pitch, Fieldview. On Friday we host mixed social hockey.

If you’re interested in joining us for the 2021-22 season, we’d love to hear from you.

We are Spencer

Spencer Hockey Club is a diverse community gathered around our sport and committed to making our club into the country's best community hockey club.

Spencer is a not for profit organisation, controlled and run by our own members through an Executive Committee. Everyone on our committee is a volunteer, although we employ coaches and some staff to manage the facilities. Each senior member has a voice as to how the club is run and the strategic direction we take. The committee is democratically elected from the membership by the members.

We have an ongoing focus on consolidating our senior section's success, developing our volunteers, and improving fundraising in support of our strategic vision to become the country's best community hockey club. We're excited by the rapid progress our juniors have made and are committed to better integration with the senior section.

Spencer Hockey Club shares facilities and a club ethos with the other sports sections in The Spencer Club family: cricket, lacrosse, tennis and squash.

We have been playing hockey at Spencer for more than 100 years.

Volunteers Make Spencer Great

We want to encourage you as a member - be it current player, alumni, parent or friend - to get involved in the Club's development. Whether it is helping out with socials, coaching, umpiring, helping us find sponsors or taking on committee appointments, our aim is to have more roles with manageable amounts of work. Whether you can spare an hour a day or an hour a month, we'd love to have you on board.

To find out more about volunteering email the volunteer co-ordinator.

The Spencer Ethic

We believe Spencer HC has a unique set of values and a culture we want to protect. This has been embodied in the "Spencer Ethic", which the Committee seeks to adhere to in developing the Club.

When playing the game, as a minimum, we expect our members to:

  • Learn and play by the rules of the game
  • Be a good sport - win with modesty, lose with dignity
  • Respect your team-mates, umpires and the opposition
  • Recognise and applaud good play
  • Pay all subscriptions and fees due to the club on time
  • Wear the Spencer colours with pride!

Club Governance

Spencer Hockey Club is an amateur not-for-profit sports club. The club has a written constitution and is run by an elected Executive Committee on a voluntary basis on behalf of the members. The Spencer club has HMRC "Community Amateur Sports Club" status, which means that we can reclaim gift aid on donations made to the club.

Full senior members can vote at the club's AGM, which usually takes place in May, and junior members vote through their team representative.

Friday Social Hockey

Spencer Social hockey is open to all genders, all ages, and all levels of skill and/or fitness. So you are radiantly fit and have an Olympic hockey medal on the wall? Join us! You haven't played in 30 years or your knee hurts a little? Join us! You never played before, always watch your kids and want to find out how to hold a stick? Join us!

On the night, bring a dark and a light shirt (so we can make recognisable teams), stick, shin pads and mouthguard. We get together at 20:00, start play at 20:15, and play for about an hour. We play every Friday throughout the year, provided I get a minimum of 8 players on the evening.

Social hockey is free for all junior hockey volunteers, parents of all junior members, and all junior members from U16s and above. On occasion (traditionally at half-term and some other holidays), we allow players younger than U16 to join, but this is by invitation only.

People from outside Spencer HC who are looking for social hockey can also get in touch to join a few trial sessions, paying a small contribution each year towards the astro hire. Feel free to forward this email to your friends, colleagues, and family members with a hockey past, present or future.
