Sadly a loss for the Bees today.. However, the scoreline does tell the whole story..
We arrived with a huge disadvantage: we had no keeper.. A massacre beckoned.. So we were very grateful for Priya to step up and don the GK kit for the first time in her hockey existence!
In the first half the team, many playing together for the first time, didn’t gel and the oppo bossed us a bit. First quarter 1-0 down, not too bad but not good. Then in the second quarter a few defensive lapses and midfield not coming back, shipped 4 goals.. Three of those 5 goals were also unlucky keeper inexperience, for which she can’t be blamed.. .
But then came the second half, and suddenly things clicked, our team started passing and running and tackling, and suddenly the match was even. Rapid learning curve of Priya and suddenly nothing went in anymore, she saved loads, to out in a spoiler: it stayed 0-0 second half! This was also due to solid defending from Maya, Edie, Lillie and Arabella.
With the team now finding their groove, we started moving up, got into their final quarter, created several chances and short corners.. We did score - but unfortunately after the whistle had gone for a foot, so instead we had another short.
All in all terrible score but not at all reflective of actual strength of the team.. Second half was a very decent bit of hockey.. Good learning curves, not just the keeper, bring on the next match. A good day with lessons learned..Well done girls, you all worked really hard and showed good hockey (especially in the second half 🤪)
